How Much It Really Costs

The cost of living in Rome

For Rome we publish city-level indicators verified for urban transport: ticket and monthly pass where the local operator's price list makes them comparable. Other costs stay separate until city sources are verified.

Rome

Rome enters the city catalogue with selective local data: when a source is dated or measures only one service, the page presents it as context rather than a general average.

Rome is the capital of Lazio and Italy's largest urban market. Costs vary sharply between the centre, outer districts and the metropolitan area, so a local figure is useful only when the source states exactly what it measures. For now the strongest city source in the catalogue concerns driving schools: Altroconsumo found Rome had the lowest city average among the nine cities observed, EUR 695 for a category B licence package. That is useful but dated, so it stays in the text and the dedicated guide rather than becoming a permanent city indicator.

Why costs here are different

  • The city's scale makes a single average weak unless districts or zones are defined
  • Private services such as driving schools and insurance can show large territorial differences

What we could not document

  • The available driving-school figure is useful but dates from 2023, so it needs fresh verification before becoming a current indicator.

Frequently asked questions

How much did a category B licence cost in Rome in the available source?

The Altroconsumo survey cited in the driving-licence guide gave EUR 695 as the city average for a driving-school package. It is a 2023 survey, so it is a verified historical reference, not a current tariff.

Why does the Rome page have few indicators?

Because Rome is too large and uneven for generic averages. We will publish indicators only when the source clearly separates city, period and cost item.
