How much does nursery cost in Italy?

Municipal nurseries have ISEE-linked fees: they can start at zero for the lowest incomes and reach over EUR 500 a month in large cities, with a family average around EUR 300. Private nurseries ignore ISEE and in 2025 cost on average between EUR 400 for reduced hours and about EUR 620 for full time. The comparison should be made on the net cost after the INPS bonus, not just on the published fee.

For children born from 1 January 2024 the bonus reaches up to EUR 3,600 a year with ISEE up to EUR 40,000, paid in 11 instalments of about EUR 327, and drops to EUR 1,500 above that threshold or without ISEE. For those born earlier the amounts are EUR 3,000, 2,500 or 1,500 a year depending on ISEE. The contribution is monthly, cannot exceed the documented cost and must be requested from INPS: it is not a discount applied by the nursery.

National surveys show differences of up to three times between one provincial capital and another, with the North on average dearer than the South. Public places also vary widely by region, and where public places are scarce families fall back on the more expensive private sector.
