Official price versus real cost

Difference+€1.50 (+22%)

Real cost

€8.25

€6.75 – €18

The price Slack puts in the window is EUR 6.75 per user per month, but that is the rate for paying twelve months upfront. Anyone choosing monthly billing — which is to say almost every team still evaluating the tool, or with a shifting headcount — pays EUR 8.25: EUR 1.50 more per person, about 22 per cent. On a team of ten that gap is EUR 180 a year, on thirty it is EUR 540. There is a second distance between price and cost, and this one favours the customer: the invoice counts active members rather than purchased seats, and a member who stops using Slack generates a prorated credit. A workspace's real cost is therefore not the list price times the number of people invited, but times the number who actually open it — with the caveat that multi-channel guests count as paid users exactly like employees.

Short answer

Slack is billed per active user rather than per seat, and the price on show is the annual one: two details that move a team's final bill more than the choice of plan does.

Slack is cheap per person and expensive per team, and the way it is billed explains why so many companies get the forecast wrong. The Italian price list shows three paid tiers alongside the free plan: Pro, Business+ and Enterprise+, the last of which is quoted on request. The Pro plan, which covers most small and mid-sized teams, costs EUR 6.75 per active user per month if you pay a year upfront and EUR 8.25 if you pay month by month. The gap between the two columns is about 22 per cent, but it is the first that appears in the shop window. The second thing that changes the bill is the word attached to the price: active user. Slack does not invoice purchased seats but the people who actually use the tool, under a published policy that credits unused time pro rata and distinguishes between full members, multi-channel guests, single-channel guests and bots. The result is a cost that falls when a contributor stops working on the project, without anyone having to remove them by hand. This guide lines up the three variables that decide the invoice: which plan, on what billing cycle, and how many people actually get counted.

How the price breaks down

How the price breaks down: Slack per user
Free planFree, with message history limited to the last ninety days. It is the plan that makes Slack instantly useful and useless as an archive.Optionalper month€0
Pro plan, annual billingEUR 6.75 per active user per month, paid twelve months upfront. It is the shop-window price, the one that appears first on the list.Optionalper month€6.75
Pro plan, monthly billingEUR 8.25 per active user per month with no annual commitment: about EUR 1.50 more per person, roughly 22 per cent, for the freedom to stop whenever you like.Compulsoryper month€8.25
Business+ planEUR 15 per user per month billed annually, EUR 18 billed monthly. Moving up a tier more than doubles the per-person cost compared with Pro.Optionalper month€15€15€18

What the price depends on

  • How many people count as active users, not how many seats you bought
  • The billing cycle, annual or monthly
  • The plan chosen among Free, Pro and Business+
  • How many external guests there are and whether they are single- or multi-channel
  • Team turnover, which generates prorated credits and charges through the year

Hidden costs

  • The shop-window price is the annual one: paying month by month costs roughly 22 per cent more per person
  • Multi-channel guests count as paid users, so an external contributor invited to two channels costs as much as an employee
  • Cost scales with headcount rather than usage: ten people on monthly Pro is EUR 990 a year, thirty is nearly three thousand
  • Moving from Pro to Business+ more than doubles the per-person cost, and it is often done for a single compliance feature
  • The welcome promotion halves the price for three months only: from the fourth month the invoice is back to full

Three realistic scenarios

Economy scenario

€0

A group of three uses the Free plan: it pays nothing and accepts the ninety-day history limit, which is no obstacle on a short project.

Typical scenario

€8.25

An eight-person studio takes the Pro plan on monthly billing to stay uncommitted: EUR 8.25 each per month, EUR 66 a month for the whole team.

Premium scenario

€18

A company that needs compliance features moves to Business+ on monthly billing: EUR 18 per user per month, more than double the Pro plan.

How to spend less

  1. If the team is stable, annual billing on Pro saves EUR 1.50 per person per month against monthly billing.
  2. Invite external contributors as single-channel guests rather than multi-channel: the former do not count towards the paid total.
  3. Check who is genuinely active before renewal: the billing policy credits unused time, but only if the count is current.
  4. Do not move up to Business+ for one feature: it costs more than double per person, and the need is often met by a connected app.
  5. If you are still evaluating the tool, stay on Free until the ninety-day history becomes a real constraint.
  6. Ignore the 50 per cent welcome discount when building an annual budget: it lasts three months, the other nine are full price.

Frequently asked questions

What does Slack really cost for a team of ten?

On the Pro plan with annual billing it is EUR 6.75 per person per month, so EUR 67.50 a month and EUR 810 a year for ten active users. With monthly billing the bill rises to EUR 8.25 each, EUR 82.50 a month and EUR 990 a year: EUR 180 of difference purely for the freedom to stop. The total is not fixed, though, because the invoice follows genuinely active users rather than purchased seats.

Who counts on a Slack invoice?

Slack's billing policy sets out four categories. Workspace owners, admins, full members and multi-channel guests are charged. Single-channel guests and bots are not. An external contributor invited to a single channel therefore adds nothing to the bill, while the same person invited to two channels costs as much as an employee: it is the configuration choice that moves the final figure most.

What is the difference between the Free and Pro plans?

The difference that matters is history. The free plan keeps the last ninety days of messages, beyond which conversations can no longer be read: Slack still works as a chat but not as the team's memory. Pro removes that limit and adds group calls with up to fifty participants, no-code workflow automation, Slack Connect for working with external teams and AI-based summary features.

Is annual or monthly billing better?

Annual billing costs EUR 6.75 per user per month against EUR 8.25, roughly 22 per cent less, but it commits you for twelve months and is paid upfront. It makes sense once the team is stable and the tool has been adopted. Monthly billing suits the early months, when the group grows or shrinks unpredictably: that 22 per cent is the price of being able to change your mind, and on small teams it comes to a few tens of euro a month.

What happens if a member stops using Slack?

Under the billing policy, after a prolonged period of inactivity the unused time is credited pro rata to the workspace account. In the same way, someone joining mid-cycle is billed only for the days they are there. This is what makes Slack's cost more elastic than a fixed-seat tool, but it requires keeping the member list tidy: credits follow activity, not good intentions.

What does Business+ cost and when is it needed?

It costs EUR 15 per user per month billed annually and EUR 18 billed monthly, more than double the Pro plan. The jump is justified when you need compliance requirements, advanced administrative controls or contractual guarantees Pro does not offer. Doing it for a single feature is the most expensive option available: on a team of twenty, the gap between Pro and Business+ on monthly billing exceeds two thousand euro a year.

Sources and methodology

How we worked it out

We used the Italian pricing page rather than the American one, because it shows the euro amounts actually offered to a customer in Italy: converting dollars would have produced figures nobody sees on screen. The two Pro figures were verified on two separate official pages, the general price list and the plan detail page, which agree on EUR 6.75 and 8.25 and describe both as per active user. We excluded the 50 per cent three-month promotion that appeared on the list at the time of checking: it is time-limited, and publishing it as the price would distort the annual cost. The billing rule — who ends up on the invoice and who does not — comes from Slack's official policy on counting active users. The list does not state how VAT is handled, so the amounts are as displayed.

Why this confidence level

High confidence: both Pro prices are verified on two separate official vendor pages, in euro and aimed at the Italian market, and they agree. The active-user rule comes from the vendor's own billing policy documentation. One secondary but real uncertainty remains: the list does not say whether the amounts exclude VAT, and digital service prices change often, which is why this guide is set for review in a month.

This is what makes a team's real cost computable: it states that you pay for active members, that prolonged inactivity produces a prorated credit and that adding a member mid-cycle is billed pro rata.
