The City notes, however, that actual duration can vary with canal traffic, tides and weather: on a day of high water or congested canals the route may be shorter. Extensions beyond the base duration are possible and are charged in proportion to time, so agree them before departure if you want no surprises on the final bill.
When does the night rate start?
At 7pm. From 9am to 7pm the daytime rate of EUR 90.00 for thirty minutes applies; from 7pm to 4am the night rate of EUR 110.00 for thirty-five minutes takes over. The EUR 20.00 difference buys five extra minutes on the water and the evening slot. In summer, when daylight lasts late, leaving at 6.30pm rather than 7.15pm changes the price without changing the experience.
Is the serenade included?
No. The municipal rate covers the gondola and the gondolier, not the music. A serenade is arranged separately, often with several gondolas travelling together and a singer and musician aboard one of them, and its price is not set by any resolution. If you want one, ask for the full cost before boarding and check how many gondolas make up the group: the per-person price of those packages has nothing to do with the EUR 90.00 tariff.
Is it better to book online or at the station?

What is the difference between a gondola ride and a traghetto?
They are two different things that merely look alike. The gondola ride is a tourist service on a set route, at the EUR 90.00 or EUR 110.00 rate fixed by the City. The traghetto is a larger gondola Venetians use to cross the Grand Canal where bridges are far apart: you stand, the crossing takes a couple of minutes and costs a few euros.
