The figure that matters, though, is what remains after tax relief. How to spend less
- If you can choose the year, install by the end of 2026: from 2027 the rate on a main home falls from 50 to 36 per cent, and from 2028 the spending ceiling halves.
- Check your tax position before signing: the deduction is recovered in equal annual instalments through your tax return, and anyone without enough tax to offset does not collect it at all.
- Compare quotes per kilowatt rather than as lump sums, and insist they itemise panels, inverter, battery, paperwork and building work separately: two identical totals can cover very different things.
- Size the system to your real self-consumption rather than your annual usage: surplus fed into the grid is valued far below what you avoid paying, so an oversized array without storage earns less than it appears to.
- If you qualify, look at the National Energy Income grant before the deduction: it is a capital grant and needs no tax liability, but it is allocated until the budget runs out.
- If the roof is over twenty years old, consider redoing the membrane at the same time: doing it later means dismantling and refitting the whole array.

This matters, because the battery is the largest item after the panels themselves: it costs between EUR 1,100 and EUR 1,300 per kilowatt-hour of capacity, so ten kilowatt-hours of storage costs as much as a five-kilowatt array.
