In financial services the cost is almost always in recurring fees rather than the headline price. Guides report total annual cost, the only figure that allows an honest comparison.

Frequently asked questions

Are instant transfers always free?

Not necessarily in absolute terms. The rule says they cannot cost more than the corresponding ordinary transfer. If your account includes free online SEPA transfers, the online instant transfer must also be free. If your tariff charges for an ordinary transfer through that channel, the instant version can cost no more than that. This is why the guide gives EUR 0 as the surcharge, not as a universal price.

Why is an online account so much cheaper?

In Banca d'Italia's survey, online accounts have lower unit prices and lower fixed costs than traditional accounts. The saving remains real only if the operations you use often are included or cheap.

Can a credit card really be free?

It can have a zero first-year charge, but you need to check how long that condition lasts. For the American Express Green Card, the waiver applies to people who have not held an American Express card in the previous twelve months; the published fee from year two is EUR 84. A no-fee card can still charge for cash withdrawals, foreign currency or paper statements.

Can the lender always charge an early-repayment fee?

No. In Italian consumer credit, compensation is possible only within statutory limits and is not due in specific cases. The most relevant case for many borrowers is full repayment of outstanding debt of EUR 10,000 or less. The charge also cannot exceed the interest that would have accrued over the remaining term, so near the end of a loan it can be lower than the percentage cap.

Does Postepay Evolution cost EUR 19 or EUR 24?

The annual fee is EUR 19. In the first year you should also count the EUR 5 issue fee, so a digital request brings the practical cost to EUR 24 before any transaction fees. At a post office the initial outlay stated by Postepay can be higher. The difference comes from separating recurring fee, issue fee and initial activation top-up.
